“This wastewater treatment system at our K.B. Specialty Foods facility is the first of its kind for Kroger,” says Lisa Zwack, Kroger’s head of sustainability.
“This anaerobic system processes wastewater from the plant to create renewable biogas and ultimately power part of the plant’s electricity needs.”
This new $9.5 million anaerobic digester in Greensburg, Ind., opened earlier this year to replace an aging conventional wastewater treatment system. It features a dome that helps capture biogas from food byproducts at the plant and converts it into energy. Because it uses an enclosed system, it also improves air quality and reduces odors.
K.B. Foods is also a zero waste facility, diverting more than 90 percent of its waste from landfill by recycling materials like cardboard, plastic and pallets; recycling food waste; and using the anaerobic digester.
The K.B. Foods wastewater treatment plant was featured in the December issue of iWWD, a trade magazine for professionals in the industrial water and wastewater industry.
